The Best Airline Miles Sweet Spots Right Now

A sweet spot is when you can book a flight for way fewer miles than the cash price would suggest. These are the redemptions that make the whole points game worth playing. I'm organizing this by the points you probably already have.

If you have Chase Ultimate Rewards: Your best sweet spot is transferring to British Airways Avios and booking Aer Lingus to Ireland — 13,000 points one-way off-peak from the East Coast. With Chase's periodic 20-30% transfer bonuses, that drops to about 11,000 points. A cash ticket on that route is usually $400-$700, so you're getting 3-5 cents per point. Chase also transfers to United, where the best value is Star Alliance business class to Europe (80,000 miles, no surcharges) or to Asia. And don't sleep on JetBlue — Chase transfers 1:1, and JetBlue can book Qatar QSuites (the best business class in the world) for 70,000 points one-way. Cash price for that seat: $5,000-$8,000.

If you have Amex Membership Rewards: Transfer to ANA for round-trip awards — 55,000 points for economy or 88,000 for business class to Europe. That business class rate is one of the best structured deals out there. Amex also transfers to Delta, where the sweet spots are flash sales: 10,000 miles round-trip to the Caribbean, 22,000 one-way to Hong Kong. Those deals are unpredictable but incredible when they hit. For aspirational travel, transfer Amex to Avios and book Iberia business class to Madrid for 34,000 points one-way — lie-flat seat, $2,000-$4,000 cash value.

If you have Delta SkyMiles: Honestly, Delta's dynamic pricing makes consistent sweet spots hard to find. But the flash sales are real and can be spectacular. Keep an eye on Delta's SkyMiles deals page and jump when you see sub-15,000 mile domestic flights or international deals in the 20,000s. The other Delta advantage: award tickets for US/Canada flights are fully refundable, so you can book speculatively and cancel if plans change.

If you have United MileagePlus miles: Domestic one-ways can drop as low as 5,500-10,000 miles on off-peak dates. For international, partner business class to Europe at 80,000 miles with zero surcharges is solid. United also has some of the cheapest intra-Japan awards: 5,500 miles one-way in economy, 11,000 in business — useful if you're already in Asia and want to hop around.

If you have Alaska Atmos Rewards: This is where the real sweet spots live. Japan Airlines First Class from the West Coast for 75,000-110,000 points — a seat that costs $15,000-$20,000 in cash. Qatar QSuites for 70,000 points. And the free stopover on international one-way awards means you can visit two destinations for one award price (e.g., Hawaii + Tokyo). Alaska's partner chart is one of the last great value charts in the industry.

If you have American AAdvantage miles: Partner awards are where the value is. Japan Airlines First Class for about 80,000 miles one-way. Qatar QSuites for 70,000 miles. The trick with AA is to search for partner flights, not AA's own metal — the partner pricing is often much better.

If you have Southwest Rapid Rewards: The sweet spot is the Companion Pass, full stop. Once you have it, every flight is effectively half-price because your companion flies free. Even mediocre per-point redemptions become great when you're getting two seats for the price of one.

One thing to keep in mind: sweet spots don't last forever. Airlines devalue regularly, and the whole industry is moving toward dynamic pricing that kills fixed-chart bargains. If you find a great redemption, book it. Don't sit on your miles hoping for something better — the best time to use them is almost always now.
