United Airlines MileagePlus
Miles value guide and calculator
United MileagePlus is one of the largest frequent flyer programs in the world, powered by an extensive domestic network and deep international reach through the Star Alliance. With hub cities in Newark, Chicago, Denver, Houston, San Francisco, and Washington Dulles, United covers virtually every corner of the globe. The program uses dynamic award pricing, meaning the cost of a given flight in miles fluctuates with demand, fare class, and timing. This can work in your favor on off-peak routes but can also lead to steep prices on popular itineraries during holidays and peak travel windows.
Major changes arriving in April 2026 will reshape how members earn miles. The program is shifting to a credit-card-centric model: non-cardholders will earn 3 miles per dollar spent on United flights, while co-branded Chase cardholders will earn 6 miles per dollar. This effectively doubles the earning rate for card members and makes the Chase United co-branded cards (Explorer, Quest, and Club Infinite) nearly essential for serious MileagePlus collectors. Cardholders also receive a 10% discount when redeeming miles for United flights, and elites can stack an additional 15% or more on top of that.
For redemptions, the sweet spots live on Star Alliance partner flights, where pricing can be more structured and predictable than United metal. Transferable point currencies are a major strength here: Chase Ultimate Rewards and Bilt Rewards both transfer at 1:1, giving you multiple ways to top off your balance before booking. The Excursionist Perk, which provides a free one-way flight within a region on round-trip international awards, remains one of the best hidden features in the loyalty space and can add thousands of dollars in value to multi-city trips.
Elite status in MileagePlus follows five tiers: Silver, Gold, Platinum, 1K, and the invitation-only Global Services. Status is earned through a combination of Premier Qualifying Points and Premier Qualifying Flights, with spending thresholds on United cards offering shortcuts. Benefits range from Economy Plus seating and priority boarding at Silver to complimentary Polaris upgrades and dedicated phone lines at 1K. Global Services members enjoy the most exclusive perks in the industry, including gate-to-gate personal assistance and virtually guaranteed upgrades.
