Delta Air Lines SkyMiles
Miles value guide and calculator
Delta SkyMiles is one of the most widely held loyalty currencies in the United States, backed by an airline known for operational reliability and a premium onboard experience. The program operates on fully dynamic award pricing with no published award chart, which means the number of miles required for any given flight is determined by algorithms that factor in demand, cabin class, time to departure, and route competitiveness. This dynamic model can produce occasional bargains but also means that high-demand flights, especially in Delta One business class, can cost significantly more miles than comparable flights on other carriers.
Earning SkyMiles on Delta flights is revenue-based: most fares earn 5 miles per dollar spent, with higher multipliers for premium cabins and co-branded American Express cardholders. One important caveat is that Basic Economy fares earn zero SkyMiles, making them a poor choice for loyalty-focused travelers. Off the plane, the Delta co-branded Amex cards (Blue, Gold, Platinum, and Reserve) offer competitive earning on everyday spending. Amex Membership Rewards points transfer to SkyMiles at a 1:1 ratio, providing a flexible accumulation strategy for those who also hold personal or business Amex charge cards.
The best redemption values in SkyMiles tend to surface on domestic economy flights during off-peak periods and on SkyTeam partner awards, where pricing can be more favorable than on Delta metal. The TakeOff 15 benefit gives Delta Amex cardholders a 15% discount on award bookings, effectively stretching your miles further on every redemption. Another standout feature is that award tickets for travel originating in the U.S. and Canada are fully refundable, with miles and taxes returned to your account if you need to cancel. SkyMiles never expire regardless of account activity, removing any pressure to use them before a deadline.
Medallion status is structured across four tiers: Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond, all earned primarily through Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQDs) with optional credit card spending shortcuts. Benefits include complimentary upgrades, Sky Priority check-in and boarding, waived same-day change fees, and SkyClub lounge access at the Diamond level or with the Reserve card. Delta has leaned heavily into spending-based qualification in recent years, making the co-branded credit cards central to reaching and maintaining elite status.
