Award Ticket Perks Most People Don't Know About

When people compare miles vs. cash, they usually just look at the price. But award tickets come with benefits that cash tickets in the same fare class often don't, and those perks can tip the math significantly.

Refundability is the big one. On several programs, award tickets are fully refundable — cancel anytime, get your miles back, no fee. Alaska Atmos Rewards does this. Delta does it for US/Canada originating flights. Try getting that on a $300 economy cash ticket. You'd need to buy a refundable fare, which usually costs 2–3x more. When I'm booking a trip where plans might change, this alone can make the award ticket worth it even if the cents-per-point math is just average.

Free stopovers are an underrated feature. Alaska Atmos lets you add a stopover on international one-way awards at no extra cost. Flying from Seattle to Tokyo? Stop in Honolulu for a few days on the way, same miles price. It's essentially a free flight within your award. Not many programs offer this, and the ones that do don't advertise it loudly.

Fare class upgrades are another hidden win. On many airlines, an award ticket books into a fare class that's equivalent to Main Cabin or higher — even when the cash ticket you'd buy is Basic Economy or a saver fare. That means your award ticket might come with seat selection, free changes, and upgrade eligibility while the comparable cash fare would have none of that. Our calculator actually factors this in when it compares the two options.

Changes and cancellations tend to be more generous on awards too. Several programs let you change award dates or routes with no fee, or for a nominal charge. Cash tickets in cheap fare classes? Usually a change fee plus the fare difference. This flexibility has real value, especially for people who book trips months in advance and aren't 100% sure of their dates.

The flip side is worth mentioning: award tickets usually don't earn redeemable miles or count toward elite status. If you're actively chasing status, every award booking is a missed chance to earn qualifying credits. That trade-off matters more for some people than others.

My approach: I always check the perks comparison alongside the price. A redemption that looks like a toss-up on pure cost can become a clear winner when you factor in refundability, better fare class benefits, or a free stopover. That's exactly what the "What You Get" section in our calculator is designed to show — so you're not just comparing dollars, you're comparing the full picture.
