Best Ways to Earn Airline Miles in 2026

Most of my miles don't come from flying. That might surprise people, but it's true for pretty much everyone who's serious about this hobby. The real earning happens on the ground.

Credit card sign-up bonuses are the single fastest way to build a balance. We're talking 50,000 to 100,000+ points for hitting a spending requirement in the first few months. One good sign-up bonus can be worth more than a year of everyday spending. If you're starting from zero, this is move number one.

The big decision is transferable points cards vs. airline-specific cards. Transferable programs — Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, Capital One — let you move points to a bunch of different airlines. That flexibility is huge. An airline co-branded card locks you into one program but gives you perks like free bags and priority boarding that the general cards don't. Ideally you want both: a transferable card as your daily driver and an airline card for the carrier you fly most.

Watch for transfer bonuses too. Airlines periodically offer 20–50% extra when you move points from a credit card. If you see a 30% bonus and you have a specific trip in mind, that's a great time to pull the trigger. But don't transfer speculatively — once points land in an airline account, they're stuck there.

Last piece of advice: don't let miles sit for years. Programs devalue constantly. Set a goal trip, earn toward it, book it, repeat. The people who get the most out of this game are the ones who actually use their miles.
