Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards has long been celebrated for its simplicity and transparency. The program has no blackout dates, meaning any seat available for purchase can also be booked with points. This straightforward philosophy extends to cancellations: if you cancel an award ticket, your points are immediately redeposited into your account with no fees or hoops. Since March 2025, award pricing has shifted from a fixed-value model to variable pricing, meaning the points required for a flight now fluctuate with demand and fare class. While this reduces the guaranteed floor on value, it also creates opportunities for lower-cost awards on off-peak flights.

Earning Rapid Rewards points is primarily revenue-based, with points earned per dollar spent on Southwest flights at rates that vary by fare class (Wanna Get Away, Wanna Get Away Plus, Anytime, and Business Select). The co-branded Chase Southwest cards (Plus, Premier, and Priority) provide solid earning on everyday purchases. A major strength of the program is its transfer partnerships: both Chase Ultimate Rewards and Bilt Rewards transfer to Rapid Rewards at 1:1, giving you two flexible currencies that can funnel into Southwest flights. Points never expire, so there is no urgency to use them before a deadline.

The crown jewel of Rapid Rewards is the Companion Pass, which allows a designated companion to fly with you for free (plus taxes and fees) on every Southwest flight for the remainder of the calendar year and the following year. Earning the pass requires 135,000 Tier Qualifying Points or 100 qualifying one-way flights in a calendar year, with credit card sign-up bonuses counting toward the threshold. This benefit is unmatched in the industry for couples or frequent travel partners and can effectively double the value of every point you earn. Southwest has also introduced an Icelandair codeshare, opening up connections to Reykjavik and beyond for the first time.

The airline is undergoing significant changes: assigned seating arrives in January 2026, replacing the iconic open-boarding system, and checked bag fees have been introduced for passengers without elite status or a co-branded card. Elite tiers include A-List and A-List Preferred, offering benefits like priority boarding, free same-day standby, and bonus points earning. While Southwest operates outside any alliance, its expansive domestic network, no-frills pricing, and customer-friendly policies continue to make Rapid Rewards one of the most practical loyalty programs for U.S. leisure travelers.
